Bird Skull Cross Necklace by The-Beautiful-Dead Bird Skull Cross Necklace by The-Beautiful-Dead
Bird Skull Cross Necklace.

No animals were harmed specifically for the purpose of creating this jewellery. All bones in this piece come from animals that were found already dead on the side of the road or elsewhere.

This Gothic style cross necklace features a the skull of a House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) touched up with white paint and coated in acrylic sealer. Black coloured beads adorn the empty eye sockets and the pendant hangs on a matte black chain. Necklace is approximately 17 inches in length and closes with a black lace style toggle clasp. Pendant is 2 1/2 inches in length.

Please note that this skull has minor imperfections which have been repaired to the best of my abilities.

If you ever make any more of these, I think they would be much better if the skull was left natural; no white paint.

I totally agree, but there was a lot of damage to the bird skulls I had available to use, so I filled a few large impact dents with a little clay and after that I didn't see too many other options aside from paint. I prefer natural bone colour myself as well. Thanks for the comment!

ahhh, okay, I see. No choice there.
Well... maybe next time mix in a teeny amount of tanish yellow to make it more natural? :)

Very good idea. I do have another one here, which also needed minor repairs, so I may give that a try! Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you so much! I have another sparrow skull here, so I might be able to make a custom piece for you or something, if you're still interested in the future. We could do a trade maybe. I love bartering.

Etsy sadly doesn't work for me, so I was wondering how much are these?
And a trade does sound nice.
I had a domestic cat skull, and I had sold it before thinking about you! I'm so sorry. I might still have another around here (if I look. My house eats things) Would you be interested? I remember you saying you wanted one.

I have them listed at $40 because the materials (the black pendant, chain, clasps) were kinda expensive, but I would be willing to trade for a completely intact domestic cat skull in good condition, if you happen to stumble upon one. If the necklace in my shop sells, I could probably put together an almost identical piece with the sparrow skull I have left here.

If I can find one, I would love to trade! If you do make another one for it, I prefer it to be like the other one that sold. I like this one, but the more round-ness of the pendant suited me. If that's okay. But if you already have all the materials that suit this style, that is okay.

But, don't worry about it yet. Still gotta find that skull first! Lol.

I can pick up materials identical to the one that already sold, so that won't be a problem at all. Even if you don't find a domestic cat skull, I'm usually interested in other skulls that I don't already have in my collection as well.

Wait- so you purchased the skull or you took a dead bird and chopped the head? I'm curious how one obtains skulls. :P If you'll pardon my sick interest for the sake of art.

I purchased this particular skull from a friend, but I do have a personal piece of jewelery made from a sparrow I found. There was chopping involved, unfortunately, but nothing will be wasted as long as I can find a use for it all. The feet were made onto earrings [link] and I may use the wings for jewelery as well now that they're dry. I hope I'm not totally grossing you out here, but I can promise that none of these animals were harmed for the sake of jewelery. All were found dead.

Lol I trust you. Oh gosh it's actually really fascinating to me. I've loved bone jewelry since I was a kid. ...I just don't understand the process of how it's done. When you say dry, do you mean adding a polish or glue to them? Ungghh you must be a really interesting person to have a hobby like this. And does your friend have a store for me to ogle over? I'm just morbidly curious how you take a dead thing, clean it, and deposit the innards, without having one hell of a tolerance for decay. Usually smell is the most repulsive thing after the looks.

No, she doesn't have a store. I buy and trade with a bunch of other collectors on a Livejournal community and sometimes I find supplies (bones and such) on Etsy. I'm super sensitive to smell, so I don't usually mess with dead things that aren't fresh. I won't scrape anything old off the road because that would absolutely turn my stomach. I also breed reptiles and friends who do the same usually give me their deceased critters. I have a frozen zoo LOL.

As for the wings, I dried them for a few weeks in Borax powder.
